Florianópolis

The island of Sta Caterina, or Florianopolis, is located in the southern state of Sta Caterina. The island is mainly known for its stunning coastline, with beaches to suit every taste. The city of Florianopolis is on the west of the island, and its road bridge connects the island to the mainland. Outside the city, there are a number of small towns and villages, all with a very distinct character - from the well populated tourist resorts on the north of the island, to the small Azorean fishing villages on the west coast, and the farmlands throughout the centre of the island. A small mountain range forms the spine of the island, and provides opportunities for beautiful walks and viewpoints. Due to its location, the west coast of the island is one of the few places in Brazil where you can watch the sun set

Florianopolis is a relatively wealthy place, and so it has a good infrastructure, roads and services. It is also one of the safer areas of Brazil, with a low rate of crime, particularly outside the city.

The Banana Tree is situated on the north west of the island in Sambaqui, close to Santo Antônio de Lisboa.

Getting there

You can get to Florianopolis within an hour on an internal flight from São Paulo airport. We recommend buying an airpass when you book your international flight which would cover your flights to Florianopolis, and allow you another trip - perhaps to Iguaçu Falls which can be reached in a morning.

Floripa beaches

With 43 to choose from, Florianopolis has a beach to suit everyone.
The northern beaches offer shallow, calm waters suitable for swimming, and attract families and tourists in search of a good sunbathing spot. Lined with cafes and bars, the small towns along the northern coast provide a variety of nightlife. The wilder Atlantic coast with its large windswept bays is a mecca for surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers, as well as nature lovers and walkers enjoying the breathtaking views. The Banana Tree is situated on a quiet suburban beach on the north west coast, which has shallow, calm waters ideal for kiyaking and paddling. Just around the corner are two larger beaches, which are popular with locals, and have a couple of very good restaurants.
